Story 01 / Mr. Squishy

The Kite That Wouldn’t Fly

A spring story about the difference between a plan and a possibility.

Mr. Squishy drew a kite on Monday. He measured every edge. He counted the knots. He made a chart showing exactly how high it would fly. By Wednesday, he had added a second chart to check the first one.

On Thursday, the kite did not leave the ground. It folded over, rolled down the hill and came to rest at his feet. He tried a different string. He tried a different hill. He tried to look as though he meant to do that.

Mrs. Squishy did not offer a better chart. She held the frame while Little Miss Squishy tied a crooked ribbon to the tail. The kite rose, dipped, and rose again. It flew a short distance, then landed in the long grass.

Mr. Squishy wrote one new sentence in his notebook: ‘Flying a little counts.’ The next day, the three of them went back to the hill.
